(ST. JOSEPH CO.) - The ex-husband of a northern Indiana woman has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for her stabbing death nine days after their divorce was finalized.
A St. Joseph County ordered the sentence Monday for 38-year-old Joseph Wayer III of Goshen in the December 2011 death of 33-year-old Barbara Sheppard. The South Bend Tribune reports a jury convicted Wayer on murder charges last month after hearing testimony about the couple's custody fight over their two children.
WNDU-TV reports Wayer continued to maintain his innocence in court Monday, saying he was wrongly convicted based on two of his hairs found at the scene.
Sheppard was found dead with throat wounds in an alley near the tobacco store in Mishawaka where she worked.
