(AVON) - An Avon student was denied a school lunch and the 13-year-old's mother said her child wasn't the only one sent home hungry.

Ebone Monet of RTV6 reports that Robin Sweitzer wants a clear answer about why her daughter Delaney said she was denied lunch on Monday.

Delaney said she got an embarrassing surprise at the front of the lunch line at Avon Middle School South.

"She said you can't have food and took the tray put it next to her and then threw it away," Delaney Sweitzer said.

The Sweitzers said Delaney didn't get lunch because she only had 8 cents in her account.

"It irritates me so bad when I watch the money that we hand out as taxpayers to other countries for their kids, but our kids are hungry because a parent's mistake and it just infuriates me," Robin Sweitzer said.

A spokeswoman for the Avon Community School Corporation said this is a case of an internal miscommunication.

The school district's policy says kids without money will be given an alternative lunch of a peanut butter sandwich and milk.

Robin Sweitzer said that would have been better than nothing for her daughter who takes medication for Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

"It tears up your stomach, she also takes a stomach pill to protect her stomach from that pill," Sweitzer said.

Sweitzer said from now on, she won't forget to add money to her daughter's lunch account, She said it is the other kids she is worried about.

"What if the kid is diabetic and dad didn't write a check or mom didn't write a check are you going to let that diabetic kid go all day long with no food," she said.

Sweitzer said she does not blame the school. She said administrators were apologetic, but told her other kids were also denied lunch because of a new policy.
