(STATEHOUSE) - Indiana State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) is teaming up with Big Red Liquors to spread the word about Indiana’s Lifeline Law, encouraging young people to call for help in alcohol-related emergencies.
Beginning today, Big Red Liquors will display informational posters and place flyers highlighting Indiana's Lifeline Law in customer bags at all 13 of their Bloomington stores.
"I am so pleased Big Red Liquors is willing to help in this important cause," Merritt said. "Obviously they are concerned about the community they invest in, and where the legally purchased alcohol goes once it leaves their stores. I'm confident this new push will have a positive impact and increase awareness of the Lifeline Law on campus."
Indiana's 2012 Lifeline Law, authored by Merritt, prevents minors who are under the influence of alcohol from being prosecuted for crimes like minor possession or consumption if they request medical attention for another person suffering from alcohol-related complications and cooperate with law enforcement officers. The law does not provide legal protection or amnesty to the individual in need of medical attention.
"Big Red Liquors will never knowingly do business with anyone under the age of 21, and we go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that we don't," said Don Rix, President of Big Red Liquors. "As parents of sons and daughters, we feel a tremendous responsibility to limit the illegal and irresponsible use of the products we sell. Yet, we know that too often alcohol can end up in the hands of minors. We are committed to bringing more awareness to Indiana's Lifeline Law in the hope that we can avoid any tragedy involving youth and alcohol. Our position is clear: We won't do business with you unless you're 21, but if you have a chance to seek medical assistance that could avert an emergency, even if you are under 21 and have been drinking, make the call and save a life."
Since the law's passage, Merritt has visited high schools and college campuses across the state to talk to students about the Lifeline Law's protections.
