(INDIANAPOLIS) - A world record was broken Saturday at the Indiana State Fair.
The world's largest popcorn ball was created, besting the previous record by 1,450 pounds.
The 6,510-pound popcorn ball was unveiled at the Ball State Agriculture/Horticulture building.
The Indiana State Police Motor Pool measured the weight, with a margin of error of 196 pounds.
Four roll-off scales were used to measure the weight of the ball, which is 8 feet in diameter and has a circumference of 24 feet, 9 inches.
The fair partnered with Snax in Pax, Pop Weaver and Indiana's Family of Farmers to pull off the popcorn feat.
"We learned a lot during this long process. It's fun to see the finished product, and it's great to be a world record holder," said State Fair Education Specialist Stephanie DeCamp in a statement.
The large popcorn ball is in many ways the crowning achievement of the Year of Popcorn theme at this year's fair.
In all, 75 people and 329 hours of work were put in to build the ball.
The base of it was built at Snax in Pax in Topeka, Ind. After it reached 2,700 pounds, it was taken to the fairgrounds, where staff members, board members and volunteers packed on another 3,800 pounds.
The ball is comprised of 977 pounds of popped popcorn, 1,113 pounds of mushroom-shaped popcorn kernels and 5,534 of a syrup mixture that contains water, sugar and corn syrup to hold it together.
The popcorn ball will remain on display through the end of the fair on Aug. 18. After that, it will be pulled apart and used to feed livestock.
