(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana state Auditor Tim Berry has resigned that office to begin fulltime as the new state Republican Party chairman.

The governor's office says Gov. Mike Pence accepted Berry's resignation and will name his replacement today.

Berry became the state Republican chairman last month after being picked for that position by Pence.

Berry is from Fort Wayne and was first elected state auditor in 2006 after serving eight years as state treasurer. The new auditor's term will run through the end of 2014, with that office up for election next year.

The governor's office says deputy auditor Kirke Willing is serving as the interim state auditor.
