(EVANSVILLE) - A southwestern Indiana felon was sentenced to nine years in federal prison after a conviction on federal firearms charges.
U.S. Attorney for Southern Indiana Joe Hogsett, announced that 28 year old Kenneth Schmitt of Evansville, has been sentenced to 9 years and two months in federal prison after being found guilty on charges of being a felon and illegally possessing an AR-15 rifle.
According to court documents, Schmitt was arrested in late 2010 on a number of drug related charges during a joint investigation by the Evansville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Schmitt was one of the first individuals charged under the U.S. Attorney's Violent Crime Initiative, in which federal authorities work with local police departments, in order to pursue federal charges against illegally-armed career offenders.
The federal charges against Schmitt are related to his trade of methamphetamine for an AR-15 style assault rifle. With a criminal history that included felony convictions, Schmitt is not legally permitted to possess firearms. After serving his state prison sentence, Schmitt stood trial federal court. Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Young cited Schmitt's extensive criminal history in southwestern Indiana in sentencing him to over nine years in federal prison.
