(TIPPECANOE CO.) - The formula that helps determine teacher pay in one area school district is being changed because of ISTEP worries.
Dan Klein of WLFI reports the Tippecanoe School Corporation (TSC) board voted Wednesday to decrease the weight of student learning in evaluating teachers, based on recommendations by State Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz.
The TSC model calls for student learning measures, including ISTEP results, to make up 30 percent of a teacher's score. For last year only, it will be 15 percent and other criteria like meeting goals will be increased. This coming year, it will go back to 30 percent.
As News 18 reported Tuesday, a Fort Wayne School Board has rejected using the A to F grading scale for schools.
TSC Superintendent Scott Hanback says it was discussed during Wednesday's work session, but without seeing the exact wording of the Fort Wayne resolution, he wasn't comfortable presenting it. As News 18 has already reported the Lafayette and West Lafayette superintendents do not anticipate passing a similar resolution either.
TSC teachers also have a new contract as of school board action Wednesday night. Included in the contract is a new compensation model based on state mandates.
Over the next two years, there will be more than $1.8 million allocated for extra pay. One-third will be based on factors like years of service and education. Two-thirds is based on teacher evaluations.
