(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis doctor faces over 20 felony counts charging him with writing illicit prescriptions for painkillers.
Authorities announced Monday that Dr. Segun Rasaki was being held in the Marion County Jail on charges of dealing in controlled substances and insurance fraud.
Court documents say the investigation began in 2009 after pharmacists contacted the Drug Enforcement Administration with concerns about Rasaki's prescribing practices.
Rasaki is charged with prescribing drugs like hydrocodone and methadone to people who didn't need them and submitting fraudulent insurance claims such as duplicate billings and claims for nonexistent office visits.
Rasaki is charged with the following:
- 23 Counts of Dealing in a Controlled Substance, a Class B Felony
- 1 Count of Dealing in a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, a Class C Felony
- 1 Count Insurance Fraud, a Class C Felony
An initial hearing is scheduled Tuesday in a Marion County court. Rasaki doesn't yet have an attorney.
The charges resulted from an undercover investigation by a DEA agent.
The charge of insurance fraud stems from findings that Dr. Rasaki allegedly filed more than $5,000 worth of fraudulent claims with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. According to prosecutors, in a review of 100 randomly selected claims, all were determined to have been falsely billed to Anthem in such a manner to increase Rasaki's profits. The review identified duplicate billings for the same date of services, "ghost" office visits, and upcoding where the medical records did not support the level of services billed.
