(INDIANAPOLIS) - A statewide count shows homelessness has increased among Indiana military veterans while the number of homeless families with dependent children has fallen by nearly a quarter from last year.
The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority says the 2013 homeless count conducted Jan. 30 in all 92 of Indiana's counties turned up more than 6,000 people, a slight decrease from 2012. The count is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for every community receiving federal funds for programs to aid homeless people.
The number of households with dependent children fell 23 percent from last year to 739 and the number of homeless children under 18 topped 1,500.
The number of homeless veterans increased by 12 percent to a total of 743.
