(UNDATED) - A Kansas beef-packing company is recalling more than 50,000 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with a type of E. coli. Some of that recalled meat is in Indiana stores.
The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced this week that National Beef Packing Company, a Liberal, Kan., firm, has recalled the thousands of pounds of ground beef products after finding they may be carrying E. coli O157:H7.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made announcements in December 2012 on this strain of E. coli, saying five states had reports of infections. That particular outbreak was found to be linked to pre-packaged leafy greens produced by State Garden of Chelsea, Mass.
The FSIS says now, the following products are subject to recall:
10-pound package of "National Beef" 93/7 fine ground beef, product code 0707
10-pound package of "NatureSource" 80/20 fine ground chuck, product code 7031
10-pound package of "NatureSource" 85/15 fine ground beef, product code 7054
10-pound package of "NatureSource" 90/10 fine ground beef, product code 7344
10-pound package of "NatureSource" 93/7 fine ground beef, product code 7004
10-pound package of "NatureWell" 80/20 fine ground chuck, product code 7484
10-pound package of "NatureWell" 85/15 fine ground beef, product code 7454
10-pound package of "NatureWell" 90/10 fine ground sirloin, product code 7577
10-pound package of "NatureWell" 93/7 fine ground beef, product code 7404
The FSIS said all these products bear the establishment number "EST.208A" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The products possibly contaminated were produced on July 18 and were shipped in 40- to 60-pound cases to retailers, wholesalers and food service distributors nationwide.
The USDA released the list of stores included in the recall. You can find the list of all locations here.
In Indiana, a couple of chains were included in the recall. The products in the list above can be found at Cash Saver Markets and one of the many IGA store locations in Indiana.
The USDA said the problem was discovered through routine FSIS monitoring, which confirmed a positive result for this strain of E. coli. An investigation determined National Beef Packing Co. was the sole supplier of the source materials used to produce the positive product.
FSIS and the company have not yet received any reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this beef. Those who feel ill and have eaten any of the above listed meat recently should contact their doctor.
The USDA said E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.
