(FORT WAYNE) - The bobcat exhibit at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is now empty after the death of the last of the species it had.
Zoo officials say the 15-year-old bobcat named Juan had been suffering from kidney problems for several years.
Zoo spokeswoman Cheryl Piropato tells The Journal Gazette that Juan had been alone in the exhibit since his sister and littermate died last year. Both bobcats came to the Fort Wayne zoo from Evansville soon after their birth in 1997.
Bobcats typically live in wooded areas in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Piropato says the zoo might try to find a replacement animal for its bobcat area, but could first make some needed repairs to the exhibit area.
