(INDIANAPOLIS) - A 15-year-old boy was out riding a bike he'd been given just the day before when he was hit by a car Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis.

Officials said it happened just after 3 p.m. in the area of 30th Street and Fall Creek Parkway.

IMPD officers on the scene told RTV6 a woman was driving her car north on Fall Creek and had a green light. Officers said she swerved to miss the bike the child was riding, but didn't swerve enough, and hit the 15-year-old boy riding it.

IMPD said when officers arrived, the boy was found unconscious.

Officers said the boy was transported in critical condition to Riley Hospital for Children with road rash and head trauma.

RTV6's Ebone Monet spoke with family members of the boy, who said he is now in a medically induced coma as he recovers. They said he'll pull through, but it will be a long road to recovery.

Family members also told RTV6 the boy had been longing for a bicycle for what seemed like forever. His mother bought him this bike on Friday as a gift.

Fall Creek was closed for a little more than an hour while investigators surveyed the scene.

Officers said the woman who hit the child is being cooperative in the investigation.

This is the second child in less than 24 hours who was riding a bike and got hit by a vehicle. Friday night, a 12 year old was hit by a car while riding a bike near Shortridge Road and Southeastern Avenue.
