(BROOKLYN) - Brooklyn town officials in Morgan County say a main water line broke Wednesday morning causing the entire town to be without water.
Brooklyn Clerk Treasurer Karen Howard says a main water line coming in from the town's wells broke around 6:15 a.m. near the Mill and Church streets intersection.
The town is working on a huge water system upgrade. They have already raised the height of their water tower and were in the process of filling the water tower. They were also in the process of upgrading water lines in other parts of the town.
Howard says the water main break is not related to the upgrade project although experts suspect the water pressure may have been a factor.
Crews are working to repair the break and estimate water will be restored by late Wednesday afternoon. Once repairs are made, residents will be under a boil water order for consumption or cooking. there should be no problems for showers or bathing.
Experts were still looking into the cause as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The water shortage impacts about 700 households and an elementary school. The Town of Brooklyn has approximately 1,600 residents.
Officials say Brooklyn Elementary School will stay open - they have water coolers in the hallways, will continue to serve lunches and have hand sanitizer in all classrooms. Portable toilets were brought to the elementary school for use.
The town has one restaurant, which will be closed Wednesday.
