10 Tents Stolen From Johnson Co. Boy Scout Troop

Last updated on Thursday, August 15, 2013

(GREENWOOD) - Police say 10 tents were stolen from a Johnson County Boy Scout troop just a few weeks before a planned camping trip.

The Daily Journal reports that the tents for Boy Scout Troop 545 were stolen out of a storage trailer sometime Sunday night or Monday morning.

The trailer is kept in the parking lot of Christ United Methodist Church off U.S. 31. Officials say a member of the church noticed the locks of the trailer had been broken.

The thieves stole tents, four lanterns and three propane tanks.

The tents were owned by the church, which supports the troop.

Officials say the troop does not have enough funds to replace the tents, which cost nearly $300 each.

"Everybody knows the Boy Scouts, and they work hard for this equipment," Paton said. "It breaks my heart someone would steal from a church."
