Unattended Backpack Prompt Bomb Squad Investigation

Last updated on Thursday, July 18, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Metro Police Department has given the all-clear after someone reported an unattended backpack and duffel bag at Military Park.

IMPD's Bomb Squad investigated. Nothing harmful was found.

A portion of the downtown canal walk was closed for about an hour and a half while police checked out the scene.

It started at around 9:30 am near the Medal of Honor Memorial when a passerby noticed the bags. Because of the proximity of the bags to the memorial, the items were deemed suspicious and the area was cordoned off.

A fully suited-up bomb technician pulled the bags out of the bushes and used an X-ray machine to determine what was inside the bags.

The process took some time because of the extreme heat. The technician had to remove his suit and equipment to cool down at certain points.

"It's always better to be safe. We don't get a chance to say - we should have, could have," said Indianapolis Homeland Security Chief Gary Coons, explaining why the incident was taken so seriously.

It turned out that the bags contained clothing.
