(TERRE HAUTE) - Around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, News 10 confirmed with Indiana State Police 29-year-old Ryan R. Steadman was seen taking a jet ski from a residence in Mecca, Ind.

WTHI reports, while patrolling on State Road 63, authorities spotted the suspect and attempted to pull him over.

Steadman led police across three counties before crashing his truck on a fence post and tree stump near Lee Avenue in Terre Haute.

Police say Steadman took off on foot and jumped into the Wabash River, swimming south before making it out of the west bank and running into the woods.

Several different agencies, as well as area K-9's, were called in to assist searching.

Around 10:30 a.m., authorities apprehended Steadman in a brush pile about 1/2 mile north of the river bridge.

Steadman is currently being booked into the Parke County Jail and preliminarily charged with theft and resisting law enforcement.
