(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis teenager has been arrested on felony confinement charges after police say he locked both his grandparents in their home to protest discipline.
The 14-year-old boy was charged with criminal confinement and criminal mischief.
The incident happened in the neighborhood off West Washington Street and Taft Street after 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Police were called to the family home Sunday evening while the grandparents were still locked inside the home, and officers found the deadbolt locks bent and wedged so that they were unable to exit from the front or the back doors.
The grandfather said he called police out of frustration after being locked in the home for about 30 minutes.
While locked inside the home, he said the boy told him, "Now you know how it feels."
When police arrived, officers wrote in their report that the child admitted to forcing the locks closed on both doors, saying, "I'm going to lock them in since they lock me in."
The grandparents said they were unable to get out of the house until police arrived and helped to open the doors on the house.
The grandfather says the child has had behavioral problems in the past and has undergone counseling. But he's afraid the boy is headed toward a life of being in and out of incarceration, and he was hoping that this weekend's episode would stop the downward spiral.
The child remained in juvenile detention, with a court appearance set in juvenile court later this week.
