Retail Council To Push For Sales Tax Back-To-School Holiday

(UNDATED) - The Indiana Retail Council plans to push again next year for legislation that would create a sales tax holiday for back to school shopping.

IRC President Grant Monahan says the plan would suspend sales taxes on clothing, school supplies and computers bought during a three-day back to school shopping period. He says it would save the average Hoosier family about $45.00 in sales taxes. This comes as Hoosier parents are getting their kids ready to go back to school this year.

Monahan says mid to late summer is the second busiest shopping season of the year for retailers. He cites figures from the National Retail Federation that estimate back to school sales per family will be down this year to roughly $635 on average compared to $688 per family last year.

The NRC says back to school shopping represents $72.5 billion for retailers nationwide.
