Prosecutor: Fatal Police Action Shooting Justified

Last updated on Saturday, July 13, 2013

(FORT WAYNE) - After an in depth investigation by Indiana State Police and the Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor Karen Richards has ruled the May 2 shooting of 22 year-old Ryan Koontz by Fort Wayne City Police was justified.

Koontz was fatally shot after police responded to a call of a man exhibiting "psychotic behavior."

In a written statement issued Friday, Richards' office said, "Officers involved were justified in using deadly force, as they reasonably believed that force was necessary to prevent serious bodily injury or death to the responding officers and innocent civilians."

Koontz's death was the fourth police-action shooting in Fort Wayne this year.
