(FRANKLIN) - A proposal to increase the number of trains running from Indianapolis to Louisville, Ky., is sparking concerns about safety and noise problems.

The proposed upgrades would allow CSX Transportation to run 13 or more additional trains on the Louisville & Indiana Railroad's tracks. That's a sharp increase over the two or three trains that currently travel the route. Train speeds of up to 49 mph would be nearly double what the trains currently run.

Luke Mastin of the Johnson County Highway Department tells the Daily Journal that officials are worried the changes could create safety hazards for motorists crossing tracks marked only with stop signs and road markings.

Railroad officials say faster trains are safer than slow ones because motorists don't try to beat them.
