(STATEHOUSE) - Wednesday Governor Mike Pence recommended to the Indiana Republican State Executive Committee that Marsha Coats complete Becky Skillman’s term as Indiana’s Republican National Committeewoman.
"Marsha Coats is admired across the state of Indiana and has devoted her life to supporting the Republican Party and the people of Indiana in countless ways," said Pence. "I am truly grateful that she is willing to accept this nomination, and I urge our state committee to enlist this remarkable woman to be our advocate on the Republican National Committee."
Coats, wife of United States Senator Dan Coats, holds a bachelor's education degree from Wheaton College and a master's degree in clinical community counseling from Johns Hopkins. In addition to teaching in public and private schools, she worked as a family counselor in private practice, and in support of the office of the U.S. Senate Chaplain. She also served on the board of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services of Northern Virginia.
A strong advocate of volunteer and service organizations, Coats and her husband formed The Foundation for American Renewal to support faith-based initiatives. She is a founding member of Project Nehemiah, a Christian non-profit organization that assists children whose parents were the victims of a terrorist organization. Coats has worked to promote Compeer, a national volunteer organization that matches companions and peers to adults who suffer from mental disabilities.
Coats has received a number of awards for her community service, including the U.S. Army Commander's Award for Public Service for her work with the soldiers and families of the U.S. Army forces serving in Germany. The U.S. State Department honored her with the Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Public Diplomacy, and the U.S. Secretary of the Navy selected her to be named the sponsor of the guided missile destroyer USS McFaul. In 2007, Olivet Nazarene University presented Coats with the Maggie Sloan Crawford Award as a woman "whose life and accomplishments marks her as an example and role model for the young women of today."
The State Executive Committee election will be held on July 22.
