Man Sentenced To 19 Years In Wife Beating And Killing Her Father

Last updated on Wednesday, July 10, 2013

(ANDERSON) - The man found guilty of attacking his wife and killing her father was sentenced to 19 ½ years.

Scott Atherton was given the aggregate sentence on Monday. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery, domestic battery and interference with reporting of a crime for the Dec. 9, 2012, incident that claimed the life of 66-year-old Douglas Gorbett, 24-Hour News 8 news partner The Herald Bulletin reports.

Court documents say his wife said she was attacked in front of their two children. He also disconnected the phone so she couldn't call 911.

Both the wife and Gorbett had visible punch and kick wounds. Gorbett died of a heart attack brought on by the beating.

Atherton pleaded guilty in May as part of a plea agreement.
