(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis man has lost thousands in an online trading card scam that he said has victimized others.
RTV6 reports, the 26-year-old victim called police to his home on Broadway Street in the Meridian Hills area on Friday afternoon, saying he lost $4,920 in the racket.
He told police he traded numerous text messages and emails with a seller from Alvarado, Texas after spotting some rare trading cards for sale on Ebay.
The victim then paid for the cards through Paypal, an online payment service that is owned by Ebay.
The service allows money to be drafted directly from a person's bank account, or payments can be made with a credit card.
Paypal and Ebay both claim to offer various protections against fraud, including refunds for some transactions that turn out to be fraudulent.
Some consumers have complained that the refunds are only issued when specific conditions apply. The victim in this case did not indicate to police whether he has requested a refund through the auction site or its payment service.
In Friday's case, the victim says he found out that the pictures of the cards that were included in the sale listing had actually been copied from other people's listings, which means the seller never had the cards to sell.
