Look For Big Changes At Brickyard 400

Last updated on Tuesday, July 23, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Look for some big changes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway if you’re heading to the Brickyard 400 this weekend.

Track officials are hoping to improve wait times for race fans after new security changes were put in place for the Indianapolis 500 in May. Many fans waited in line for several hours and some missed the start of the race because of tightened security in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing. The wait times prompted an apology.

For the Brickyard 400, the Speedway made some adjustments, including having more gates and lanes open. Additional staff workers will be on-hand to assist, and tickets will be marked instead of stubbed. Fans who bring in coolers will also notice a change--they'll be allowed to bring one bag and one cooler per person.

"We're allowing one bag and one cooler per person. So, we need to make sure people do that because that really helped back the lines up when you had one person bringing in multiple coolers. So it's one bag and one cooler per person is another change our fans will notice," said IMS President Doug Boles.

While the changes are expected to improve wait times, Boles is asking fans to arrive early and remain patient. About 200,000 people are expected to visit the track this weekend.
