(INDIANAPOLIS) - School is back in session today for some central Indiana students, and school officials are expecting to see the results of an investigation into problems with ISTEP testing.
Today's announced findings will impact schools and families starting a new school year, because teacher pay and student performance are tied to ISTEP results.
Right now, students and administrators are starting a new school year without knowing the results of testing from last school year. That's because of statewide problems with ISTEP testing in the spring.
A computer glitch was the reason given by the company that administers the tests, CTB/McGraw-Hill. Eighty-thousand students had trouble logging on or completing their ISTEP tests.
Superintendents and teachers complained the interruptions posed problems for students, and expressed concern that overall ISTEP scores would be affected.
The state's Superintendent for Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz, called for an independent review, and the results of that review are expected to be released later today.
In the meantime, schools have had to plan ahead for a new school year.
Ritz is expected to release the report from Dr. Richard Hill of the National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessment today at the Statehouse at 1:00 p.m.
The question is the validity of the ISTEP scores given the interruptions, which may have caused students frustration or stress.
That should be learned today. As well as the overall impact of the interruptions.
