(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Public Schools will hire the chief of staff for the Durham, North Carolina, schools as their new superintendent.
Board members say Lewis Ferebee was their unanimous choice after they discussed the names of three finalists in closed session on Saturday. President Diane Arnold says Ferebee's experience as a principal and administrator in three North Carolina school districts is a perfect fit for I-P-S's needs. She says Ferebee has a track record of trimming budgets and successfully turning around failing schools -- including middle schools, where Arnold says the challenge is typically more daunting.
Board member Michael Brown says Ferebee impressed the board as someone committed to working collaboratively with the board, the community and staff.
Neither Ferebee nor the other two finalists had ever been a superintendent. Brown says those who worked with him in Durham say he's ready. He says the board has faith in Ferebee's ability as a judge of talent to surround himself with the right assistants to cover any gaps.
Ferebee and the board still must negotiate a contract. The board hopes to have him in place by the end of August.
Former Superintendent Eugene White retired earlier this year.
