(MONTGOMERY) - The widow of a 60-year-old man who died in a shootout with a state trooper two weeks about says he may not have been right mentally at the time because he had recently changed medication for Alzheimer’s disease.
"Yes, he had not been himself for the past month," Alice Jones told the Washington Times-Herald in a story published Saturday.
Jones said she was so concerned that she called James Jones' mother seeking help for her husband, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's eight months earlier. "I just know the Alzheimer's had something to do with it," she said. "It can't be proven, but he was just so out of character."
Police say Trooper Jared Lents was struck multiple times June 17 while responding to a report of an armed robbery at the Black Oak Armaments gun in the Daviess County town of Montgomery, about 50 miles northeast of Evansville.
Jones died from his injuries. Lents was released from the hospital that night.
State police say they are finishing their investigation into the shooting.
Alice Jones said she doesn't know what caused her husband to shoot at police that day. "We are never going to know the exact truth," she said. "It is a tragedy we may never know the answer to."
