(JAY COUNTY) - A four-year-old Portland girl was rushed to the hospital Sunday after she was accidentally shot by her eight-year-old sibling.

According to the Jay County Sheriff's Office, Madison Dyer was with her family Sunday evening sitting around a campfire. Her eight-year-old sibling was nearby, shooting a .22 caliber rifle at a target set up in the yard.

At some point, Madison ran into the path of the rifle as it was being discharged. She was struck in the head and rushed to a hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition.

Police say the shooting was unintentional. The case remains under investigation.
