First Human Case Of West Nile Virus Confirmed

(RIPLEY CO) - Indiana State Department of Health officials say the first human case of the West Nile virus in 2013 was reported in Ripley County.

WISH TV8 reports, West Nile virus is a mild form of illness and can include flu-like sysmptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash.

Nine counties have tested positive for the virus - Adams, Allen, Clinton, Grant, Hamilton, Jefferson, Starke, Vanderburgh and Vigo.

In order to prevent the virus, experts say people should:

Avoid places where mosquitoes are biting.

Stay away from insect repellent containing DEET, picaradin or oil of lemon eucalyptus to clothes and exposed skin.

Install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the home.

When possible, wear pants and long sleeves, especially if walking in wooded or marshy areas.
