(INDIANAPOLIS) - Charles Wilson of the Associated Press reports that experts say a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling could lead to a national DNA database that would make finding criminals simpler and more effective.
Indiana State Police forensic scientist Kristine Crouch says such a database could make it easier to track criminals because anytime anyone left DNA at a crime scene, police would know who they are.
But she says setting up that database could require billions of dollars and millions of hours of work.
The court ruled June 3 that police could take a DNA swab from anyone arrested for a serious crime without violating their rights.
Some legal experts say that raises privacy concerns and think the ruling could eventually lead the government to keep DNA profiles on everyone.
