Community Urges Restoration of Closed Drive-In

Last updated on Monday, July 15, 2013

(MUNCIE) - A drive-in theater that stood as a Muncie landmark for decades faces an uncertain future as its owner weighs what to do with the 20-acre property.

Many residents tell The Star Press they want to see the Ski-Hi Drive-In revived. Owner Michael Chalfant says he doesn't oppose the idea but worries that the amount of money needed to do so would put the project out of reach.

The Ski-Hi was built in 1952 and once attracted hundreds of moviegoers each weekend. It closed in 2005 when Kerasotes Theaters decided against reopening it.

Chalfant says he bought the Ski-Hi for $65,000 but estimates it could take $300,000 or more to rehabilitate it. He says he hopes a nonprofit organization might tackle the project.
