(COLUMBUS) - Indiana police say they’re keeping an eye on what happens with switchblade sales now that lawmakers have lifted a ban on selling them in the state.
The General Assembly this year removed restrictions on switchblade sales that had existed since the late 1950s as part of a broader bill on hunting and fishing regulations. Republican state Rep. Sean Eberhart tells The Republic the ban was obsolete because there is little difference between switchblades and one-handed spring-assisted knives that are legal.
Indiana, Alaska, Texas and Kansas all abolished laws banning switchblades this year.
Columbus police Lt. Matt Myers says police are being cautious and are concerned that young people who don't know how the knives work could be hurt.
He says police will contact lawmakers if problems develop.
