Woman Sentenced To Four Years For Injuring Child

Last updated on Monday, June 3, 2013

(LAFAYETTE) - A former Indiana woman who pleaded guilty to neglect for head injuries that left her 4-month-old son with a host of medical problems has been sentenced to four years in prison.

A Tippecanoe Superior Court judge who sentenced 35-year-old Leona Willis on Friday also ordered her to spend three years on community corrections and three years on supervised release.

The Journal & Courier reports the former Lafayette woman and current Chicago resident pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury days before her scheduled trial.

She brought her son to a Lafayette hospital in December 2011 with a skull fracture doctors said was likely caused by abusive head trauma. The boy now suffers from a seizure disorder, blood loss anemia and other problems.
