(MUNCIE) - Two central Indiana children and their babysitter had to rescued by firefighters from a rain-swollen river after their canoe drifted out of control in the river’s swift current.
The canoe carrying the 22-year-old woman, a 10-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister was swept Friday afternoon down the White River in Yorktown by the river's fast current.
They ended up stuck on an island in shallow waters about five miles west of Muncie.
The Star Press reports that the canoe's three occupants screamed for help and a passerby who had noticed their plight called 911.
Firefighters from three firefighters responded and were able to rescue the trio within about 45 minutes using a rescue boat and safety ropes.
