Specialty Indiana Youth Group License Plates Returning

Last updated on Saturday, June 1, 2013

(UNDATED) - The Indiana Youth Group will soon have their specialty license plates back.

An administrative law judge with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles ruled against the BMV's removal of the plate from the Indiana Youth Group.

IYG Executive Director Mary Byrne says they were giving plates as thank you gifts but the BMV claimed they were auctioning off or selling the plates, which was grounds for termination of the contract with IYG.

Byrne says the judge ruled that IYG did violate a section of its contract because those thank you gifts constituted an extra fee if people had to donate to IYG to get them. However, judge said the punishment should not have been a termination of the contract but rather IYG should have been given 30 days to fix their mistake.

Byrne says they had been negotiating with the BMV in the spring but those negotiations ended after the Indiana General Assembly had adjourned.

Byrne says while the BMV does have the right to appeal, she just hopes the entire ordeal is over. If no appeal is filed, the IYG plates will be available in 30 days.
