Man Sentenced After Dragging Death

Last updated on Wednesday, June 12, 2013

(VALPARAISO) - A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for driving over a woman who was trying to stop him in a northwestern Indiana bar’s parking lot and dragging her to her death.

Fifty-year-old James Lohman III pleaded guilty to felony charges of drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident in the September 2011 death of 45-year-old Sheri Jania. Authorities say Jania was a bartender at the Shift Change Bar in Burns Harbor and was standing in front of Lohman's car, trying to make him wait for police after a fight.

The Times of Munster reports that the Porter County judge said Monday that Jania's death was far from an accident since others in the parking lot yelled that she was underneath the car.
