(CRAWFORDSVILLE) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a canoe accident that occurred Friday evening on Sugar Creek, 10 miles downstream of Crawfordsville.

Christopher Wilson, 22, of Brazil sustained a dislocated shoulder as a result of the accident.

Wilson was in the front of the canoe, with Joseph Megali, 27, of Terre Haute in the back.

The two subjects came upon a large tree that was partially sticking up out of the flowing water. Instead of portaging around the tree, they tried to steer under it. Once they were close to the tree, the current shifted their canoe and sucked them into the tree. Wilson reached his arms up against the trunk of the tree in order to push off, dislocating his shoulder and capsizing their canoe.

Most of their gear was recovered by another canoe in their group a short distance downstream.

They managed to upright their canoe and make it a few miles farther downstream to Jim Davis Bridge to summon help. Wilson was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Crawfordsville where he was treated for his injury and released.

Neither subject was wearing a life jacket. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.
