(MUNSTER) - People in northwestern Indiana appear to run the greatest risk in the state contracting Lyme disease from ticks.
Associate entomology professor Catherine Hill of Purdue University in West Lafayette says maps from Purdue, the Indiana State Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show Lyme disease in Indiana is concentrated in the northwestern corner of the state.
Hill tells The Times of Munster that researchers can't explain why the disease is most prevalent in the region, but a possible reason is the dense population there. She says Lyme disease has been detected in every county in Indiana.
Franciscan Physician Network President Dr. Claude Foreit says Indiana had 81 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in 2011.
