(JEFFERSONVILLE) - The fate of a now convicted murderer and arsonist will soon be in the hands of the jury.
Jeffrey Weisheit was convicted on all counts of arson and murder Tuesday and now faces the death penalty.
Weisheit was convicted of setting fire to his girlfriend's home in 2010, killing her two children who were inside. He had plead not guilty to the charges.
The penalty phase of the trial began Wednesday and jurors heard testimony from prosecutors showing evidence they believe warrants the death penalty.
Defense attorneys presented the beginning of their mitigating testimony, attempting to show that Weisheit does not deserve to be put to death. That testimony will resume today and the jury is expected to begin its sentencing deliberations on Friday.
The jury could recommend the death penalty, life in prison without parole or a prison term determined by the judge.
