Indianapolis Park System Ranks 47th In Nation

Last updated on Wednesday, June 5, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis is among the 50 largest cities with the best park systems. That’s according to the latest ranking by The Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore index.

The index ranks Indy 47th among cities, tying the city with Charlotte.

ParkScore gave the Circle City one "park bench" on a scale of one to five. The study gives Indianapolis high marks for its median park size of more than 10 acres, but says only 32 percent of residents live within a 10 minute walk of a park. The study also says the city doesn't have enough playgrounds.

The study concludes that better access to park lands will improve overall quality of life for Indianapolis residents.

Indy ranked higher on the ParkScore index last year. They say the decline is due to the debut of higher ranking cities. Minneapolis, New York, Boston, Sacramento and San Francisco are the top five park cities.
