(GREENWOOD) - The Greenwood fire chief was suspended without pay after the city said he swore in firefighters after being told he couldn't.
Fire Chief James Sipes was told on Monday he would be suspended for five days. According to the letter to Sipes, Greenwood's city attorney previously met with Sipes to tell him he can't swear in firefighters. After that meeting, the city said he swore in four new firefighters and "numerous other personnel into various positions."
According to Indiana Code, a city's safety board must appoint fire department employees, except anyone in a policymaking position. Greenwood's municipal code stipulates that the fire chief can appoint an assistant chief, division chiefs, battalion chiefs and administrative staff officers.
Sipes is scheduled to return to work on June 17.
