(INDIANAPOLIS) - Officials investigating Saturday’s warehouse fire on Belmont Avenue have another hurdle to overcome to complete their investigation.
IFD Captain Rita Burris says air quality tests done at the site of the fire indicate a dangerous level of asbestos. Because of this, investigators will have to wear protective suits and breathe through respirators.
Burris says the asbestos won't prevent investigators from finding the cause of the fire but they will have to work harder to find it. Burris says investigators will only be allowed near the debris for 20 minutes at a time.
Tests had already shown asbestos in the roofing, pipes and floor tiles, but Burris says that's not uncommon for a building of that age and type of construction. The warehouse was built in the 1930's.
The Marion County Health Department expects Wednesday to receive the results of air samples collected by the EPA. Burris says the results will provide the information needed to assess asbestos hazards during the incident.
