(INDIANAPOLIS) - The discovery of a human jawbone in an Indianapolis park has sparked a mystery about whether it could belong to one of the city’s founding fathers.
George Pogue went missing in the spring of 1821. His body was never found, and state archivists hope the jawbone yields clues to Indiana's oldest cold case.
The Indianapolis Star reports it could be another month before researchers know how long the bone had been there.
State archivists Vicki Casteel and Jim Corridan say if the dating of the bone matches up with Pogue's disappearance, the next step would be to track down descendants for DNA testing.
They acknowledge that Pogue might have already been found. A newspaper article from 1905 mentions a skeleton unearthed near that spot a few years earlier.
