Construction Underway On Ohio River Bridge

Last updated on Wednesday, June 19, 2013

(LOUISVILLE, KY) - After 40 years of discussions, planning, and lawsuits, construction is underway on the downtown Ohio River bridge project.

The crowd of local, state, and federal officials along with families looking to be a part of local history gathered on the site that, in three years, will be under the new bridge to celebrate the work of those who had come before them to make Tuesday's ceremony possible.

An ecstatic Governor Beshear counted down from 10 to start the construction as the Belle of Louisville blew her whistle just upstream of the bridge site. The assembled dignitaries shared the historic moment with some of the children who attended the event, breaking ground with them.

Officials with Walsh Construction say that people will start to notice work along Interstates 65 and 64 as crews prepare add lanes.

The bridge is expected to open to traffic in 2016.
