(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana-based companies have lost more than $345,000 in a little more than three months to an email scam, the FBI said Tuesday.

Officials said scammers are spoofing known contact names from legitimate companies, instructing the business to update bank account information that is used to send payments to the company overseas.

"The cyber criminals then access funds sent to the new account and quickly transfer money to other accounts of the cyber criminals," FBI Special Agent Wendy Osborne said in a news release.

A common-sense approach can mitigate the risk. The FBI recommends that a business that receives an email with instructions to update bank account information should first follow up with the company before making payments to a new account.
