Boathouse Blast Caused By Meth Lab

Last updated on Friday, June 14, 2013

(OSCEOL) - Authorities say an explosion that destroyed a boathouse in northern Indiana was caused by a meth lab.

Osceola Police say a man who was in the building when the explosion happened Tuesday told police he was working on a carburetor when it blew up, but St. Joseph County sheriff's deputies say methamphetamine was being cooked there.

The man was hospitalized with burns. Police didn't release his name.

Neighbor Fred Story tells WSBT-TV he was working in his garden about 8 p.m. Tuesday when he heard a boom followed by another loud noise. He also says he smelled a chemical odor.

The blast blew out the boathouse's windows.

While meth labs are a problem across the state, Indiana State Police say they're rare in St. Joseph County.
