Bike Helmet Credited For Saving Girl's Life

Last updated on Tuesday, June 11, 2013

(PRINCETON) - An 8-year-old southwestern Indiana girl is home from the hospital, with a bicycle helmet being credited with saving her life.

Colleen Schneider was riding her bike on a Princeton street when she was hit by a car on May 25.

She suffered a broken clavicle, some facial fractures and head trauma. Dr. Susanna Burkhead tells the Evansville Courier & Press that children without helmets in accidents like Colleen's suffer massive brain damage.

Doug Schneider says his daughter was answering questions from the paramedics after the crash. He's an Evansville police sergeant and says he's disturbed that so many bicyclists not wearing helmets when they can be lifesavers.
