Three Hoosier Students Advance To National Spelling Bee Semifinals

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Three students from Indiana have advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

13 Indiana students attempted to make the semifinals this year.

14-year-old Joseph Kirkpatrick from Highland Middle School in Anderson, 13-year-old Mary Skirvin from Brown County Junior High School in Nashville and 13-year-old Margaret Peterson, a home school student from Granger, were the only ones to advance.

Kirkpatrick and Peterson are both competing in their third spelling bees while Skirvin is in her first. They'll join 39 others in the semifinals Thursday afternoon. Those that advance will compete in the finals held Thursday night.

The semifinals will be broadcast live at 2 pm on ESPN 2. The finals will be shown at 8 p-m on ESPN.
