Last updated on Friday, May 17, 2013

(RIPLEY COUNTY) - A 17-year-old boy was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in a youth facility after killing three high school students and injuring three more in a crash in Ripley County.

Judge Carl Taul sentenced the teen to serve his time at the Cedar Ridge Youth Facility in Muncie. He driver's license will be suspended until he is 21 and he will be on probation until he turns 21.

The deadly crash happened on March 7 at the intersection of Fairgrounds Road and County Road 850 West.

Killed in the crash were 18-year-old Jacob Vogel, 17-year-old Timothy Bowman, and 18-year-old Samantha Hansen.

Police said the teen, charged as a juvenile, was driving a pickup truck more than 80 mph when he crashed into a classmate's truck while speeding to beat him to the intersection in Osgood.

The trucks were carrying six South Ripley High School students.

Both vehicles disregarded a stop sign before they collided.

Police received reports that the teen's truck almost hit a school bus picking up children earlier on that morning.
