(PLAINFIELD) - A middle school "Teacher of the Year" in Hendricks County resigned after he was charged with attempted child molestation in a case that involves a student.
Drew Smith of TheIndyChannel.com reports, Joseph Singleton taught math at Plainfield Middle School and was named the district's "Teacher of the Year" for 2013.
A detective with Hendricks County received a call about the allegations Wednesday.
"He was contacted by the prosecutor in reference to the teacher at the middle school possibly having an inappropriate relationship with one of the students. At that point in time, our detective began the investigation," said Lt. Jim Yetter with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department.
The Plainfield Community School Corp. issued a statement Thursday that it is "cooperating fully with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department who is conducting the investigation in conjunction with other agencies."
The district said Superintendent Scott Olinger met with the family of the student and that "the safety and security of our students is our top priority."
Several students spoke to RTV6 about the allegations against Singleton.
"I don't really want to believe it, but it's a pretty sick world, so you never know," a student said.
"Everyone's talking about it. It's everywhere. A lot of people at our school think that he did do it," another student said.
The school declined to release additional information, citing the ongoing investigation.
An email went to parents concerning the charge. Gayle Kline, the district's community relations coordinator, declined to say if there were other allegations involving Singleton.
A cone was placed over a "Teacher of the Year" plaque in front of a tree that was planted to honor Singleton.
Police said Singleton turned himself in on Thursday and was released on bond the same day.
